Historical TextsPascin, Foreword from Sculptures bois et fil de fer de Alexander Calder, 1929 Foreword from Sculptures bois et fil de fer de Alexander Calder, Galerie Billiet-Pierre Vorms, Paris. Exhibition held 25 January-7 February 1929. Foreword from Sculptures bois et fil de fer de Alexander Calder By some miracle, I have been inducted into a group of Aces of American Art, a society of successful painters and sculptors!!! —The fortunes of life for an itinerant painter! The same fortune led me to meet Stirling Calder, the father. Since I was out of New York when our exhibition was held, I cannot testify to the success of our effort; but at any rate I can testify that Mr. Stirling Calder, who is one of our best American sculptors, is also the handsomest man in our Group. On my return to Paris, I met his son, SANDY CALDER, who at first sight was very disappointing. He is less handsome than his father. Honestly!!! But on looking at his work, I know that he will soon make his mark; and that in spite of his appearance he will achieve success with his work, exhibiting his work alongside his father and other great artists such as PASCIN, your narrator. Franchement!!! |
