Archives

Since 1987, the Calder Foundation has amassed and organized an exhaustive archive on Calder and his work. The core of this archive consists of Calder’s personal and professional papers and photographs, on deposit from the Calder family. Additional material has been collected from family friends, photographers, and museums. These archival documents include exhibition and catalogue materials; business, commission, project, and foundry records; bank statements; passports and visas; and Calder’s personal correspondence and photographs. The archive also contains inventory records from Calder’s primary American dealers: Pierre Matisse Gallery (1934 – 1943), Buchholz Gallery/Curt Valentin (1943 – 1955), Perls Galleries (1955 – 1976), as well as the records of Calder’s European dealers: Galerie Percier (1931), Galerie Louis Carré et Cie (1946), and Galerie Maeght (1948 – 1976). Consisting of over 130,000 documents in addition to 26,000 historic photographs, dozens of films, and thousands of books, magazine articles, and press clippings, the archive is a resource for curators and scholars but is not currently open to the public.
